Ludwig-Hoffmann Primary School extension Berlin-Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, Germany
3rd prize, Architectural competition, 2009

The extension to the existing school building mediates between the heterogeneous elements of its surroundings south of the Karl-Marx-Allee while simultaneously asserting its position in the urban environment through its scale and clear inward orientation. Arranged around the school playground, the new building provides spaces for play and learning for children in the first three years of school. The use of climate-regulating elements (earth and other natural materials) minimises the amount of technical installations and marks a new direction in contemporary school building in Berlin.
